TOUGH POETS REVIEW

Vaginal Davis

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Vaginal Davis became a founding mother of the city’s queer punk underground in the 1980s. Her bands included Afro Sisters, ¡Cholita! The Female Menudo, Pedro, Muriel and Esther (produced by Steve Albini), and black fag (with Bibbe Hansen, produced by Kim Gordon and Beck). Integral to Queercore, Davis challenged punk’s racial and sexual orthodoxies through music, performance, self-published zines, and a distinctive mythology of dis/identification, fiction, and social critique.
